From the is this for REAL? department… Genetically Engineered Hypo-Allergenic Cats Apparently this company, Allerca Inc, is going to be creating cats that will not cause people to have allergic reactions to them. Supposedly these cats will be coming off the assembly line in 2007, and have a whopping price tag of $3,500. I love cats, as most of you know, I’m not allergic to them but I do know a few people who are. I seriously doubt that the the cat allergic populace at large are going to be rushing over to Allerca and reserving a cat. Although I do see a future where you will be able to “custom build” you pet. Imagine if you will…
A call center, a cubicle farm, a phone rings
Representative of Build a Pet : “Thank you for calling Build a Pet, where we don’t start building your very own special bundle of joy until you tell us exactly how you want it, my name is Jane, how can I help you today?”
Customer : “Oh, uh hi, I’m interested in getting a cat…” Trails off a little embarrassed
Rep : “Certainly, I can help you get started on the most wonderful cat made especially for you!” (cheeriness oozes through the phone)
Rep : “What type of cat were you looking for?”
Customer : “What types do you have?”
Rep : “Well, we have shorthair, longhair, no-haired,big, medium, small, skinny, cuddly..”
Customer : “Oh, ok… um what do you have in a medium shorthaired one?”
The rep then proceeds to describe all the breeds, and the customer picks one.
Rep :” what features do you want on that?”
Customer : (a little confused) “Features?”
Rep : “Yes we have the hypo-allergenic feature, the no claw feature, the good with kids feature…”
Customer : “Can I get more than one feature?”
Rep : “Certainly, we actually have different packages that have predetermined features. We have the “Gift for kids cat”, the “independent” cat for those who live alone. And many other packages. We also are running a Gemini special, get twin cats for the price of one and a half!”

I’m sure you get the idea… I just wonder if you’ll be able to get it in thirty minutes or less?
