Drama is life with the dull bits cut out. -Alfred Hitchcock
Posted by Monkeymanx in Movie ReviewI watched The Village. M. Night Shyamalan is a good director, but I think he needs to change from being the-twist-at-the-end director that he is now. I was reading an interview with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost in the second part of that interview Simon says this about The Village.
“If it had been his first film it would have been received a lot better. But now he’s the guy that does twists. He’s a good director, and he certainly knows how to build tension and deliver surprises, and he knows how to frame all these shots, but after The Sixth Sense, because he did Unbreakable next, which is another film with a twist and then he did Signs which is another film with a twist.”
If you don’t know who Simon Pegg and Nick Frost are, they were in the movie Shaun of the Dead.
I have to agree, Shyamalan should do a few movies with out twists at the end, just to change things up a bit.
I liked The Village, it was a pretty good movie, unfortunately, it was accidentally ruined for me. I think it was when I went to see AVP in the theater, The Village was playing at the same place, and people were coming out and talking about it. I overheard a phrase, that I remembered, and ruined the twist for me. So other than knowing the ending I liked The Village, but not as much as Signs, which I liked a little less than Unbreakable, which I liked a bit less than The Sixth Sense.
Of course this isn’t the first time I’ve had a plot twist accidentally ruined. One time when I worked nights, I was flipping through the movie channels, and I got a call, after the call, I noticed the movie was The Others, I decided to watch a minute or two of it, then figured I’d watch the rest when I rented, or as it turned out borrowed, the DVD. The problem was that I saw the scene where the plot twist was revealed, and I thought it was the beginning, I thought it was a cool idea for a movie.
But I digress… I’d recommend renting The Village, it’s good, but its re-watch value is very low.

Good review and I pretty much agree with you.
