Going over some rented (netflixed) movies today…

Super Troopers
At the behest of Candy, I watched this movie. The only thing I had heard about it was that it was stupid, but funny. Candy was the one who had told me that. It does have some funny scenes. Especially the sequence leading up to the title. I really dug the meow scene, too. I’m sure there are a few quotes from this movie that will pop up in my movie tourettes repertoire. The actual “story” is fairly lame and holds about as much water as a sieve. But I did laugh out loud a few times. I would say that Super Troopers is probably a good movie to rent with a 3 or 4 other people so you can spread the cost.

Be Cool
It has been a long time since I’ve seen Get Shorty I remember that I thought Get Shorty was ok, but nothing great. Be Cool is the same way. Looking back the story was very predictable. John Travolta was not in good form, it seems that this was one of those films that he was pressed into doing. Vince Vaughn was funny as a white guy who thinks he’s black. But I think Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) stole just about every scene he was in. Dwayne Johnson plays Vince Vaughn’s homosexual body guard. He hammed it up and was fairly flamboyant, it cracked me up. Cedric the Entertainer was the next best actor in the movie. James Woods not only looked his age (57) but also looked like death warmed over. Uma Thurman and Harvey Keitel both seemed to have been forced to do this picture and phoned in their performances. I was kinda hoping for a funnier film with a little bit of action. But it fell flat with just a little bit of comedy that was funny and action that just did not work. If you really liked Get Shorty, you might want to rent Be Cool or if you are a BIG fan of The Rock. Otherwise, wait for it to come on HBO or Showtime, or whatever…

Alone in the Dark
Let me say this right up front… Avoid this movie at all costs!! For a movie that has some quasi big names in it: Christian Slater, Tara Reid, Stephen Dorff, it sucked! It made no sense. I never played the video game this was based on, but I bet it was a lot better than this movie. The story was chaotic at best. I was hoping the CGI monsters would be kinda cool, but not really. There was a lot of shooting into the dark in this movie, basically for no reason. There was one scene where I guess the director thought it would look cool to have people shooting into the dark in slow/stop motion (think very cheesy/cheap Matrix knock-off effects that didn’t work out) that made me stop and say “WTF? is there a point to this??” I should have read for the 96 minutes I wasted on this movie. Actually I could have watched paint dry and had a better time. I am jealous of Candy because I watched this while she was asleep. She woke up and asked if it was a bad movie (I must have had a what-was-that-I-just-stepped-in look on my face). I told her she missed nothing. So if anything good comes out of my having watched that movie, its that someone who reads this will not watch it!

Have you seen Batman Begins yet? I wrote a movie review of it. But don’t read it till you’ve seen the movie.
