I have been converted. A few months ago I scoffed at Beav’s fanaticism about Firefly and Serenity. But I just got though watching the series. Or I should say what was made of the series. When you hear someone on TV say “he was cut down in his prime” that describes Firefly. I wish I had gotten into it sooner, but I was skeptical. Beav telling me that it was written and directed by the guy who made Buffy and Angel, made me think it was going to be a teen angst show set in space. That is far from the case. If you have not watched the show and like any science fiction, westerns, or just a damn good story then you should get the DVDs. Firefly is a blending of the past and the future. It’s a western in space. It’s science fiction with cowboys. It truly is “wagon train to the stars” as Gene Roddenberry tried to describe Star Trek. For Roddenberry’s time, that was a pretty good description. But that description has not been fully realized until Firefly. Granted a space western sounds hokey when you put it that way. Firefly is not hokey, it maybe a bit cheesy in some parts but never hokey.
The way the show was made is different from any show I’ve seen. Watching each episode is like watching a mini-movie. I never felt like I was watching a TV show. Maybe it was different when the episodes were aired on TV, but I highly doubt it. Of the few shows I like: Dead Like Me, Wonderfalls, Babylon 5, The X-files (well the early seasons) I think that Firefly is one of the best. Ever!
So now I am looking forward to seeing the movie Serenity to see if the unanswered questions are answered, to watch my new favorite starship crew in action once again, to see how it all turns out. And I can’t wait!
