Nada. Zilch. WTF? As it turns out the movie is being released in limited venues today. I know there is some reason involving money (probably sums of money that I will never personally see in my lifetime) that they do limited releases, but it is just annoying. I guess I’ll have to keep an eye out and see if I can catch it when it gets a wide release.

Here are some movie trailers that look interesting to me. Most are slated to come out later this year but one is supposedly already out…

The Objective Release date: 2/6/2009 (Supposedly you can see it On Demand)
I’m kinda curious about this one. Honestly, it looks like it could be good, but probably not great.

Anvil! the Story of Anvil Release date: 4/10/2009 (limited)
I had never heard of this band, and from little I have listened to their music (thanks to Amazon’s samples) they don’t sound like a band I would listen to, but the documentary looks interesting.

Sleep Dealer Release date: 4/17/2009 (limited)
Near-future sci-fi, kinda reminds me of William Gibson novels

X-Men Origins Wolverine Release date: 5/1/2009
Wolverine, my favorite X-man. This movie could be good, but the potential to suck is quite high, especially since they have Gambit in the movie.

Star Trek Release date: 5/8/2009
I’m going to see this one expecting to see a sci-fi action movie. I’m not a big trek fan, nor am I a huge fan of JJ Abrams (Cloverfield was not good, Lost either imo)

Terminator Salvation Release date: 5/21/2009
A new Terminator movie, I’ll give it a shot. The last Terminator movie was ok.

Drag Me to Hell Release date: 5/29/2009
Sam Raimi returns to the horror genre! No Bruce Campbell, but I guess you can’t get everything you want.

Transformers Revenge of the Fallen Release date: 6/24/2009
The first one was not bad. More of a nostalgia thing for me.

The Hurt Locker Release date: 6/26/2009 (limited)
Could be good, I’ll give it a shot.

Public Enemies Release date: 7/1/2009
Story of John Dillinger, looks pretty good. Candy wants to see it for Johnny Depp, of course.

G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Release date: 8/7/2009
Nostalgia again, like Wolverine ( and transformers 2) has a high potential to suck.

Inglorious Basterds Release date: 8/21/2009
Quentin Tarantino goes to war. Interesting cast with Eli Roth as an actor. Looks good though.

Extract Release date: 9/4/2009
Jason Bateman’s comeback continues in this new Mike Judge movie. Hopefully this will be as good as Office Space!

Yeah, so this past week I got a year older. Candy showered me with DVDs! Apparently she passed “Know your Geek 101″ with flying colors. She got me Babylon 5 Seasons 2-5 and X-Files Seasons 4-6. She is too good to me! We didn’t make a big fuss about the birthday, we went out to eat at the Macaroni Grill and that was about it.
Other than that I’ve not been doing a whole lot other than work and playing World of Warcraft.

Let’s Talk About Movies
I haven’t been watching as many movies as I used to. More and more I’ve been saying “I’ll wait for that to come to DVD”. What is kind of odd is that I’ll be all about seeing a movie at the cinema, but the week after it gets released, I’ll say “I’ll wait for that to come to DVD”. I’ve done that with V for Vendetta, and Da Vinci Code, just to name a few recently. The last movies I went to see in the theater were Ice Age Meltdown (meh the first one was a little better) and The Notorious Bettie Page. I liked The Notorious Bettie Page, it was a fairly good biopic, but I felt like there was something missing from the movie. I can’t say what, but it seemed to lack something. Even though it seemed like something is missing, I recommend it.
Since I’m a comic book nerd, I had to check out the Ghost Rider trailer.
Before seeing the trailer, I had my doubts about Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, but it looks like he might work out. From what I’ve seen in the trailer, I’ll go see the movie, but there is some potential for it to suck, which is the case for any comic book movie. Daredevil and Electra sucked but the trailers were not so bad, from what I remember.
Beav mentioned a pod/video cast called Geekdrome to me. So I checked out the latest episode. IMO, it’s not as good as Diggnation, but I subscribed to it. On Geekdrome they talked about the Superman Returns trailer. Talked is a bit mild, the fawned over it, damn near having an orgasm. I decided to watch this trailer that would change my life…
About 15 seconds into the trailer I remembered that Superman is my least favorite comic book hero. He is the Achilles of comic books. He only has one weakness…going on cocaine binges in Vegas. No wait, that’s not it, Kryptonite, that’s it. That’s his physical weakness, his character flaw is that he is too good. For example Batman has no problem dangling a bad guy from a rooftop to get answers, but I think Superman would frown on that. I really don’t know, since I haven’t read any Superman comics in ages because I think he sucks. But I digress…
Back to the trailer. It’s a Superman movie. It looks slicker than the old ones (obviously). But in essence it’s a movie about an almost invulnerable boy scout. I think I’m going to pass, or possibly I’ll wait for that to come to DVD.
Since I’m on comic book movies I’ll mention that I have not seen X-Men 3. But I have bought tickets to go see it on Sunday. I’m a little excited about the movie, but I find that these days I just can’t get as excited about movies as I used to. I blame this on Hollywood putting out shitty movies for the the past 5-10 years. There have been good movies in those years, don’t get me wrong. But for every Sin City there are 25 Stealths. I guess I’m tired of digging through a mound of shit to find gold flakes. I just hope that it’s not that I have out-grown movies, that I have lost my cinema innocence never to regain that sense of wonderment, the excitement at a trailer.

Time magazine online (is it still considered a magazine if its online?) has a really good double interview with Neil Gaiman and Joss Whedon (linky). Joss Whedon is the creator behind Firefly and Buffy among other things. Neil Gaiman is best known for the Sandman comic book series and has written quite a few novels.
Of course both creators have movies coming out on Sept 30th. Wedon has Serenity and Gaiman has Mirrormask
The Time interviewer comments on this…
“TIME: That’s exactly the simile I was looking for. So you guys both have movies coming out on September 30th.”
and I love Neil’s response
“NG: It will be National Geek Day. ”
There are a ton of great quotes in this interview, I would recommend reading it all the way through, especially if you are fan of either of the two creators.

"My ass is for sale and I want to do big movies that pay a lot of money to shoot in L.A. Starting right now: No more art!"
WILLIAM H. MACY telling the New York Daily News about his career goals.

Art, schmart – Macy’s on sale
Critical acclaim just isn’t enough for indie movie actor William H. Macy.
After years of turning in quirky show-stealing performances in everything from “Boogie Nights” to “Fargo” (for which he received an Oscar nomination), the brilliant Macy wants hard cash.
Lots of it.
“Recently, I realized I’ve got all these artistic frequent-flier miles – and so, I’m cashing them in,” he told Lowdown at Tuesday’s premiere party at the V Steakhouse for the TNT film “The Wool Cap,” in which he plays a mute do-gooder.
“My ass is for sale, and I want to do big movies that pay a lot of money to shoot in L.A.
“Starting right now: No more art!”
So, would the 54-year-old Macy like to star in “Diehard 4″ or “Armageddon 2″ or some other overpriced blockbuster with lots of explosions?
“Yes. Yes. And yes! It doesn’t matter. I want to do big, fat movies,” he declared. “I’ve got two little kids – a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old. It changes when you have kids.”
Never mind all that effete praise.
“You quickly do an inventory and wonder if you should start apologizing in advance,” Macy said. “But my daughter just tore the seat out of a chair – so that’s worth one movie right there. I’ll just remind her of that when she’s old enough.”
From the New York Daily News

You have got to admit, sometimes it’s refreshing when people tell it like it is. William H. Macy is one of my favorite character actors. In my opinion, he ranks up there with other great character actors such as Jerry Orbach, Peter Boyle, and others whose names I’ve forgotten. I thought Macy was really good in Mystery Men and Fargo. It’s good to see that he is trying to get himself into a starring role. I hope he does! But to be honest, I think it would have to be a script that is written around him. He has an understated delivery that is not really indicative of a blockbuster star. Maybe he’s a good enough actor to pull that off.
Hmmm… now that I think about it, Macy would probably be a better Robert Langdon than Tom Hanks. See my previous write up on Da Vinici Code and Hanks.
Anyway, I wish Mr Macy the best of luck landing his Huge LA paycheck, and hope that until he gets that, he will take on the quirky parts that has made him so cool.

I send myself news items from work, I think with the intention of bloggin my opinion about them… so here goes:

Tom Hanks to play lead in Ron Howard’s take on The Da Vinci Code
I read, actually I listened to, The Da Vinci Code a few months ago. I really enjoyed it! It made me think, and it also made me wonder if the author was telling half truths about things to get you hooked into his story. I always get that feeling from a Michael Crichton book. Regardless it was a good “read” and now Richie Cunningham is making the book into a movie starring Kip Wilson. (For those of you too young to remember Happy Days and Bosom Buddies that would be Ron Howard and Tom Hanks, respectively) I’m not quite sure If I think Tom Hanks will be able to pull off Robert Langdon (The Da Vinci Code’s protagonist). Don’t get me wrong, Hanks is an excellent actor, but he would not be my first choice as Langdon. Actually I’m not sure who I would cast as Langdon. When I read the book, I kept seeing Langdon as just a guy… no real celebrity comes to mind. Maybe a younger Harrison Ford (a la Indiana Jones), but not totally. I hope the movie turns out as good as the book did. I also hope Hanks pull this character off. The more I think about Hanks’ past performances, the more I think he can do it. We’ll see.

Now to get my Nerd on…
One step closer to Star Wars
A European Space Agency put an Ion propulsion rocket into orbit around the Moon. To show my nerdness and explain the link text, the TLA in TIE fighter (the Imperial ships that attacked the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars)Stands for Twin Ion Engine.

So yeah, I figure that soon they will be making advances in Ion engine technology, next will be Hyperdrives. Which as we Star Wars geeks know “Traveling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops, boy.” Sorry, I just got nerd all over your screen there. Honestly I’d love to see a resurgence in space exploration and innovation. Will it happen? Who knows? But I can always look to the sky and dream…

The Passion of the Clerks will be sequel to Clerks. The sequel will pick up ten years later from where it left Dante and Randal and the rest of the gang.

As most of you know I DIG Kevin Smith’s movies. Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. I haven’t seen Jersey Girl- so I won’t comment. It looks like Kevin is getting back to his roots. The Passion of the Clerks will be a sequel to Clerks. The sequel will pick up ten years later from where it left Dante and Randal and the rest of the gang. This could be very good or could go horribly wrong. Obviously, I want it to be very good. I’m going to try to keep my hopes at a low simmer until I see the first trailer.
